The history of Tsinghua University often conveys the mixed feelingsof the Chinese people. Built in 1911, it was funded on part of the BoxerRebellion indemnity compensation as a result of China’s defeat by theEight-Nation Alliance: Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Japan,Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
