What is Life About ?

What is life about? We push very hard everyday to make more money, to gain power and recognition. We neglect our health, time with our family and to appreciate the surrounding beauty and the hobbies we love to do. One day when we look back, we will realize that we don't really need that much, but then we cannot turn back time for what we have missed.

Life is not about making money, acquiring power or recognition. Life is definitely not about work! Work is only necessary to keep us living so as to enjoy the beauty and pleasures of life.

Life is a balance of work and play, family and personal time. You have to decide how you want to balance your life.Define your priorities, realize what you are able to compromise but always let some of your decisions be based on your instincts. Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim of human existence. So, take it easy, do what you want to do and appreciate nature. Life is fragile. Life is short. Do not take life for granted. Live a balanced lifestyle and enjoy life!

Unit 5 Scientific Research

Text 1 The Scientific Attitude

What is the nature of the scientific attitude, the attitude of the man or woman who studies and applies physics, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, medicine or any other Science? We all know that science plays an important role in the societies in which we live. Many people believe, however, that our progress depends on two different aspects of science. The first of these is the application of the machines, products and systems of applied knowledge that scientists and technologists develop. Through technology, science helps man to gain increasing control over his environment. The second aspect is the application by all of thinking and acting? First of all, it seems that a successful scientist is full of curiosity — he wants to find out how and why Moreover, he thinks he can improve the existing conditions, whether of pure or applied knowledge, and enjoys trying to solve the problems which this involves. He is a good observer, accurate, patient and objective and applies persistent and logical thought to the observations he makes. He utilizes the facts he observes to the fullest extent. He is skeptical (好懷疑的) — he does not verify them. Furthermore, he is not only critical of the work of others, but also of his own, since he knows that a number of factors tend to disturb neutral and objective investigation. Lastly, he is highly imaginative since he often has to look for relationships in data which are not only complex but also frequently incomplete. Furthermore, he needs imagination if he wants to make hypotheses of how processes work and how events take place. These seem to be some of the ways in which a successful scientist or technologist thinks and acts.

難 句 解 析 in their work.

of society 修飾 all members,of the special methods of thought and action 修飾 application, that 引導定語 從句修飾 thought and action。

第二個分句中 look for...unconnected 作 makes 的賓語補足語,其中 even if 引導讓步狀語從句。 — he does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available and therefore rejects authority as the sole basis for truth.

Text 2 “Accidental” Discoveries

In the long history of man’s creativity, discoverers seem to fall intotwo classes. The first is the ingenious (機靈的) person who sets out to find the solution to a problem. The second is the “l(fā)ucky” one who appears to come across something by “accident”. But we should be clear about what we mean by “accident”problem of the “pitting (蝕損斑, 氫氣泡疤)”which spoiled gun barrels after they had been fired for a certain length of time. In his research, the first thing that he did was to order a number of barrels to be made of new steel alloys. One of these alloys contained a high percentage of chromium(鉻). A gun barrel was made of this new“chromium steel”, but the first shot fired through it broke it into a dozen pieces. So the fragments were thrown on to the waste heap. A week or two afterwards, the expert noticed that among the now worn fragments of metal, the broken pieces of the chromium steel barrel were as bright as they had been originally. From this “accidental” discovery developed the enormous benefits of “stainless steel (不銹鋼)”.

Behind the great rubber industry of today lies a story of one man’s search and of his discovery by “accident”. Rubber in its natural state is hard when cold, and soft and sticky when heated. Goodyear, an American, had been trying to find a way in which molded rubber on to a stove and at the same time a piece of sulphur slipped out of his hand. He scraped the bits of boiling rubber on to a plate. But when it had cooled down, what a different sort of rubber it was! It was cold, and yet elastic. He had invented — by “accident” — the basic method of preparing rubber for commercial use. This list of discoveries by “accident” could fill a long book, and remember most of them happened when somebody asked himself: “Why?”

The Lesson of the Bamboo Trees

One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream and listen to the chirps of birds and the rustling of leaves in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees bend under pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their upright after the wind had died down.

When I think about the bamboo tree's ability to bounce back or return to its original position, the word "resilience" comes to mind. When used in reference to a person, this word means the ability to readily recover from shock, depression or any other situation that stretches the limits of a person's emotions.

Have you ever felt like you are about to snap? Have you ever felt like you are at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.

During the experience you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally drained, mentally exhausted and you most likely endured unpleasant physical symptoms.

Life is a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, bend, but don't break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.

A measure of hope will take you through the unpleasant ordeal. With hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be.The unpleasant ordeal may be easier to deal with if the end result is worth having. If the going gets tough and you are at your breaking point, how resilience.Like the bamboo tree, bend, but don't break.
